Before starting the YouTube channel, we had a dream to create a 30 Days of Code series where anyone could learn the basics of software development in just 30 days. During the Summer and Fall of 2015, we created thirty tutorial videos and partnered with HackerRank to develop related code challenges. It was released day by day starting December 31st, 2015 and has amassed millions of views on YouTube and 10+ million code HackerRank submissions.
When our founder was taking her Introduction to Computer Science class, one of the first things she learned was the terminal (also called the command line). She learned how to interact with a computer using a text-based interface - also known as what the hackers use in the movies! Kathryn had never taken a computer science class before college so she thought this was the coolest thing in the world. She was officially a "hacker"! So when it came to deciding what she wanted to share on the YouTube channel, this had to be the first topic.
What if you could learn the basics of how to use a common technology in around 5 minutes - especially when you are in a time crunch like at a hackathon? That was the inspiration for this project! This series contains useful quick start guides that help you get up and running with a particular language or framework, including HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, and Javascript.
When I was first learning how to code, I really wanted to make my own iOS app and release it to the app store. It didn't need to be the most popular app or even useful at all, but I thought that it would be a fun project to tackle over the summer before my sophomore year. Little did I know, developing an iOS app is quite the task!
I started by buying a HeadFirst book on iOS development and following along a few YouTube tutorials. I really enjoyed learning with YouTube because there were many videos on the same topic. By watching these, I could get different explanations on the same idea and develop a deeper understanding.
After a few months of watching the in-famous iOS course from Stanford and videos from a few other YouTubers, I realized I had not watched a single video created by a woman.
Although it would take me a few years to kick start my own YouTube channel, that's when I knew I wanted to create my own community and teach programming online.
